Koreader install help

Hi,

I want to install koreader on my aura hd. I already installed start menu.

I go to the link below and the instructions say

"Extract the koreader folder of the zip into the ".kobo" directory (both KoboRoot.tgz and the koreader.png file are only needed for the older installation based on Filemonitor. See below."

My question is: where do i get this zip file? I don't see a link to it on the github website.

Someone can explain me this?

Hi

i'm trying to recompile the kernel of my kobo Glo, i prepare the environment and compiled creating uImage...

before try to flash, i removed the internal SD and made a backup with dd if=/dev/internal-sd of=backup.img bs=4M

then, i flashed the uImage
dd if=uImage of=/dev/internal-sd bs=512 seek=2048

...

when i put this into the Kobo, this not work.. ok, no problem i think... just return the image i have backuped... but it not works.. i spend all the day trying to recover the kobo and after a lot of trying (get uImage from the kobo 3.8.0 firmware package and the u-boot-mddr) and i have to erase the recovery and the rootfs partition and replace with contents of the backuped backup.img ...

alot of troubles...

someone can say me why this not works? maybe because bs=4M ?? i did something wrong??

after that, using the post to another thing... i'm needing to recompile the firmware just to change the console from ttymxc0 to tty0 (i need free ttymxc0 to use with an TTL bluetooth module), this is not working and i think its because the kernel console is running under the ttymxc0

thanks alot for any information

Kobo LibraryThing integration

Anybody ever heard of any way to integrate the two?

At a minimum I would like any book I buy for Kobo to show up in LibraryThing, ideally it could even do stuff like track when the book is first completed, maybe other stuff as well.

I am not seeing anything around... I'd even try to write something myself despite my programming skills not being very good, but I am not sure where to start even...

The eink readers at least don't really have an app model like a tablet, and the desktop app doesn't have plugins, and while there is some kind of Kobo web API, it seems to be aimed only at partner stores and the like (not for apps).

So that would seem to leave trying to sneak in on the desktop/mobile app API (probably has cryptographic signing), making an app which can run on the eink system (I know it can be done, but not easy for someone like me, not easily distributed), or scraping logged in kobo webpages or similar ugliness.

Touch Kobo Touch freezing while reading

I'm posting this here as I've been unable to get any advice from Kobo.help or the regular Mobilereads Kobo forum. Hopefully someone here may have a solution for this problem

My Kobo Touch (2 years old - N905B) has recently started to freeze while I read. After a few minutes, it responds to the string of instructions that I had given it while it was frozen and then functions properly until the next freeze. I believe this only started after my recent upgrade to firmware 3.8

I guess it can be better described as "slow processing", makes me feel that the problem has to do with memory buffering (but I'm no software expert).

I've tried:
logging out/in,
Pin hole reset,
Factory reset (several times)
Deleting all my books, except one new one, to see if the problem is being created by a corrupt file
Downloading a new book to see if the problem occurred there (it did)

To my surprise I found that increasing the size of my font stopped the problem for a few days - but then it started again

FYI my wife's Kobo Touch (same vintage and same books as mine) doesn't have this freezing problem, but I've read (on Mobilereads Kobo forum) that some other readers are having this problem.

Does this sound like a problem with the SD card? I would appreciate any ideas as this is getting very frustrating.

Thank you

Unable to add WiFi Network and solution

I had an occurrence yesterday when after trying to connect to a WiFi network with a hidden SSID and no password, all preexisting WiFi networks got wiped from my Glo, and I was unable to successfully add any new ones.

While YES I could scan and add one, it was never added to the list of known networks.

Prior to doing a factory reset I decided to make a new "empty" wpa_supplicant.conf file (well not exactly empty; it contained a copy of wpa_supplicant_conf.template), place it in a KoboRoot.tgz file and load that onto the Glo.

Hi!

As far as I know, my applications (Launcher, CoolReader, chess, etc) are not working with the new Kobo Aura H2O. So, I've created this thread to investigate and find the fix.

I have no Aura H2O, so you help is very appreciated!

If you want to do this, and I can be of any help (I have an H2O), please let me know.

jlynton, please provide what exactly is not working.

Also I need to know, do you have an experience in connecting to Kobo through SSH? I know that you had Kobo Glo. If so, I'm sure that we'll find the solution soon.

Kobo Aura H2O CPU

Many Aura H2O reviews tell that H2O has a Cortex A9 cpu (instead Aura HD has a Cortex A8)

Is it right or a refuse in the review ?

Since also some Aura HD reviews tell that HD has a Cortex A9 (which is wrong), I suspect that HD and H2O have the same identical Soc, but I search a confirmation or not

Kobo H2O: Need SD Image

Hi!

My device wont boot after trying out some suggestions here. I pry-ed my H2O open to find a 4gb sd card inside. The bezel seats over the device via some weak glue.. It doesn't seem to be much of a waterproofing solution.

Anyway, is there anyone kind enough to do the same to get a working SD-card image?

Instructions for patching firmware 3.11.0

$
0
0
Before starting:

1. Make sure your Kobo ereader is already running firmware version 3.11.0 (4d8eac1207).

2. Check that your battery is well charged.

Patching from Windows, Linux (i386/x86_64), or Mac (OS X 10.8-10.9, i386/x86_64):

1. Download and extract patch_kobo_3110.zip attached.

2. Download the Kobo firmware archive version 3.11.0 for your device (See this thread) into the 3.11.0_source subdirectory. (Don't extract.)

3. Read and edit all the *.patch files in the 3.11.0_source subdirectory in order to: choose which patches to enable (patch_enable=`yes`) or disable (patch_enable=`no`); and to change some of the replacement values to suit your device and preferences. (See the section below on customising the patches.)

4. In Windows double-click 3.11.0.bat; For Linux/mac run ./3.11.0.sh from the command line.

5. If there were no errors, copy the resulting KoboRoot.tgz from the 3.11.0_target subdirectory to the .kobo directory on your ereader.

6. Safely eject and unplug the device, which will then update and restart.

To return your ereader to its original unpatched state:

1. Edit all the 3.11.0_source/*.patch files to disable all patches (set patch_enable = `no` for every patch).

2. Repeat steps 4-6 of the procedure above.

Customising the patches to suit your preferences and device

Some patches require no customisation, you can choose simply to enable them or not. But the following patches allow more customisation and their initial values should be considered examples only.

1. Custom reading footer style: There are three example styles, comment out the styles you don't want by adding a "#" character at the beginning of the line beginning with replace_, and leave the style you want uncommented.

More complex customisation is possible by editing the replacement css text, see the Kobo Patcher thread for examples.

2. My 15 line spacing values: Change the lines of the enabled patch starting with replace_float: the middle number is the original spacing value, the number to change is on the right.

The values are the line spacings set by the adjustment slider. The actual spacing depends on the font used, but for most fonts a value of 0.7 gives very tight spacing with ascenders/descenders overlapping, a value of about 0.9 gives a spacing similar to that of a mass-market paperback. The smallest value available in the unpatched firmware is 1.0.

3. Custom font sizes: Change the lines starting with replace_int. The middle number is the original value, the number to change is on the right.

The values are the font sizes set by the adjustment slider, they are in pixels so the absolute size depends on the device: size 20 on the Glo is about the same as size 25 on the AuraHD. Some books change the base font size, so you may need font sizes that are larger or smaller than your normal reading size to allow for adjusting such books.

4. Custom left & right margins: Change the lines starting with replace_int. The middle number is the original value, the number to change is on the right.

The values are the margin widths (in units of about 1% screen width I think) set by the adjustment slider. The margin size is added to whatever margin is fixed in the book (if any) and in reading software (The kepub reader has a base margin of about 2 units, the epub reader has a base margin of zero).

5. Brightness fine control: Change the lines starting with replace_int. The middle number is the original value, the number to change is on the right.

The values are the percentage amounts that the brightness slider changes when the small or large sun symbols are tapped. (Both should probably be set to the same value).

6. ePub adjustable top/bottom margin (disabled by default): Comment out one of the replace_string lines (i.e. add a '#' character to the beginning of the line) and leave the other uncommented to select whether both top and bottom, or just the top margin, should be made adjustable. Change the right-most number of the replace_int line to set the size of the top/bottom margins relative to the left/right margins, depending on your device. (The suggested values should make the top/bottom margins roughly equal to the left/right margins).

Use smart phone to convert web page to epub and send to Kobo Touch over WIFI

$

A smart phone is good to browse your favourite stomping grounds on the web, and select what you want to read. An ebook reader is perhaps where you would like to actually chew the cud at leisure. (This harks back to the original cow-related meaning of 'to browse').

Dotepub.com provides a bookmarklet-based utility that .. "digests :)" .. web articles into epub files. So I have been looking for a good way to implement this route :
[web/html] --> [epub] --> [smart phone] --> [Kobo Touch].

In this post, I have pulled together a set of ideas and tips (none of them is my own, btw) that dovetail nicely to achieve the above goal.

[1] Installing the dotEpub bookmarklet on your smart phone:
DotEpub works through a bookmarklet that you install by drag-and-drop.
Opera, opera mini and chrome for Android (to name some examples) do not support drag and drop setup of a bookmarklet. You have to create one manually by pasting the bookmarklet's javascript code into the bookmark dialog's URL box.

[2] Running the bookmarklet while viewing the page you want:
The browsers named above do not run the bookmarklet within the current document's context if you go through Menu --> Bookmarks --> Click on bookmark. Therefore, nothing happens if you try this. There is a workaround that is good in Chrome. Let's say the bookmarklet is named "dot-epub". Just start typing d..o..t.. in the url box, and the browser will show a suggestion list that should have "dot-epub" right near the top. Click on this, and you will soon see the nice green banner from dotepub.com across the top of the page. You will be able to download the epub to your default download folder.

[3] Preparing the Kobo to receive the epub:
My device has been plagued by Wifi issues (and I believe I am not alone in this situation). So I wanted a solution that did not involve cloud/web access through the built-in toy browser and Nickel's nightmarish wifi setup experience.

I already had USBNET working - activated via the Launcher hack from this forum. I modified the USBNET script so that it would activate Wifi instead, and added the new script to my Launcher menu. This results in a 100% connection success rate, and it avoids the "success.html" problem. The script also starts up dropbear (the sftp server). (See end of this post).

At this point, I had thought of installing the http client 'curl'. But wait - there's a better way :

[4] Preparing the Phone to send the epub to Kobo:
Installed ES File Explorer (which most users would probably want on their phones anyway). Apart from many other useful things, this app can take an SFTP server (e.g. dropbear on kobo) and represent it as virtual folder that you can seamlessly explore in the phone. Next, enable the wifi hotspot in the phone.

.................

To actually transfer an epub to your reader, Dear Reader, all you do is the
following:

[1] Run the Wifi setup script via Launcher and have it connect to the phone's wifi hotspot.

[2] Use the file manager app on the phone to drop files into the Kobo.

Cheers,
Swamp Thing.

Using Kobo as a touchpad

Hello,

it is very pleasant to use multi-touch capabilities of the Kobo Aura.

Is it possible to use it as a touchpad for the computer, preferable over wifi or just over usb if not possible otherwise.

I already found https://github.com/The1andONLYdave/kobo-touchpad/ but it only works for windows.

I would like to use it under linux. Is there already a project that achieved this?

Mini KOreader--Request to solve CHM parsing the Chinese code problem

Hi,
KOreader runs well on various types of KOBO devices for Chinese e-book.

There are two problems:

1---Chinese CHM file is parsed out clutter characters, mainly of every HTML file encodes the Chinese character set(such as GBK or GB2312,and so on), but koreader can't display properly.---how to do? the chinese doc,txt files are OK.

2---Under Koreader,Vertical layout in Chinese, can only Horizontal display typesetting. Under kobo system it is ok.
How to do display the Vertical layout Epub file for KOreader?:book2:

Glo Updating ancient Glo firmware

Hi!

I update my own Glo manually now and then (the wifi update usually doesn't work), but my mother has a Glo, too, and she has never updated it since she bought it in feb 2013. She asked me to do the update, because she is a little computer-shy. :) Can I update manually to 3.11 in one go, or should I do something (what?) in between?

Thanks!

Bookstore - Free Books on device

There does not appear to be way to view the 1 million free books available in the kobo bookstore while using the bookstore on a Kobo, like a the Glo. I realize that you can find free books on the Kobo website, but wouldn't it be nice to somehow show free books that are available on the device its self?

Does anyone know if this could be possible with a hack/patch to the Bookstore app?
