Instructions for patching firmware 4.5.9587

$

See the Firmware update - 4.5.9587 discussion thread for information about what has changed in this firmware version.

See the Index to the Metazoa firmware patches thread for a description of what some of these patches do.

Before starting:

1. Check Settings > Device information to make sure your Kobo ereader is already running firmware version 4.5.9587 (c77383d7d1). If not, then you need to upgrade before applying this patch.

2. Check that your battery is well charged.

Patching from Windows, Linux (i386/x86_64), or Mac (OS X 10.8-10.9, i386/x86_64):

1. Download and extract patch_kobo_4059587.zip (attached).

2. Download the Kobo firmware archive version 4.5.9587 for your device (See this thread) and copy it into the 4.5.9587_source/ subdirectory that was created in step 1. (Don't unzip the firmware archive.)

3. Read and edit all the *.patch files in the 4.5.9587_source/ subdirectory in order to: choose which patches to enable (patch_enable=`yes`) or disable (patch_enable=`no`); and to change some of the replacement values to suit your device and preferences.

4. In Windows run 4.5.9587.bat (double-click); For Linux/Mac run 4.5.9587.sh (double-click, or right-click + run, or execute 4.5.9587.sh from the command line, or drag 4.5.9587.sh into Terminal, depending on your particular OS/desktop.)

5. If there were no errors, a new 4.5.9587_target/ subdirectory will be created. Copy the KoboRoot.tgz from this subdirectory to the .kobo directory on your ereader.

6. Safely eject and unplug the device, which will then update and restart.

To return your ereader to its original unpatched state:

1. Edit all the 4.5.9587_source/*.patch files to disable all patches (set patch_enable = `no` for every patch).

2. Repeat steps 4-6 of the procedure above.

Note that the following patches are enabled by default:

In librmsdk.so.1.0.0.patch:
`Fix page breaks bug`
`Default ePub monospace font (Courier)`

In libnickel.so.1.0.0.patch:
`Custom left & right margins`
`Custom page refresh options`
`Fix three KePub fullScreenReading bugs`

Glo Problems restoring a Kobo Glo SD image using Mac

I updated to the 4.3.X firmware accidentally (did not realise using pocket via wifi would trigger a firmware update), and then I must have made a mistake while trying to downgrade my firmware to get the old home screen back. As a result, after my kobo went into updating mode, it ended up with a mostly black screen with a few white wavy vertical lines.

I worked out I probably needed to reimage my SD card. So I have obtained two SD images (one through this forum, one from my children's kobo, which I have saved as kidkobo.img on my mac desktop) but I am having trouble restoring either of these images to my SD card.

Using Disk Utility, I get the following messages when I try to Restore image:
"Restore process has failed. Click Done to continue."
Under the Details:
Validating target...
Validating source...
The volume on device "" is not of type Apple_HFS or Apple_UFS
Could not validate source - Device not configured
Operation failed..."

So then I tried using Terminal.
I used the following code:
sudo dd bs=2048 if kidkobo.img of=/dev/disk1
(found this code instruction here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Rest...Card-MAC-OS-X/).
Terminal asked me for my password, which I entered.
Then it returned the following:
dd: kidkobo.img: No such file or directory.

***Why can't Terminal find the .img file?***

I have tried it with the image file provided form one of the mobileread forum members (thank you very much davidfor) and Terminal returns the same "No such file or directory" text.

If anyone would be so kind as to help me with my problem, please understand that I haven't studied coding since I went to uni in the 1990s, and never with macs. So please use very simple, "for dummies" language. If it helps, I am running macOS Sierra v10.12.5. I am hoping desperately to downgrade the kobo glo HD to 3.19.5761 or even 3.15.0 to get the "old" home screen back.

Hello
I'm looking for a solution to change the pages without touching the screen.
Is that possible to add 2 buttons connected in USB to go up/next or down/forward?
I have some troubles with the touching screen.
Thank you for your help.

Aura H2O Turn pages by voice

I am new to mobile reads. My principal reason for joining is to seek help. I am paralysed from my neck down and currently use my Kobo e-reader using a mouth stick. However I'd really like to be able to use my e-reader by voice, ie to be able to turn pages by saying "next page" or "previous page" to go back. I did see one possibility with a Kindle using HID commands in conjunction with a Raspberry pi. However I would prefer to stay with Kobo. So dear readers, any bright ideas out there?

In case anybody is thinking of a tablet, such as an iPad, while I know a software solution to this probably exists, it doesn't have the same readability as an E Ink reader, particularly outside so I'm discounting the tablet route. I am also not particularly interested in text to speech options such as audible. I want to read the written word.

Obviously, my E reader came as a transformative development in my ease of reading. For many years I struggled with great difficulty to turn pages using my mouthstick on regular books. While in hospital originally, I read Kane and Abel, The Day of the Jackal and many other books by asking somebody passing my bed to turn the page. As you can imagine, this required the book to be pretty good to persevere! Thankfully these days, my e-reader gives me the scope to read that I had longed for.

I am based in Dublin, Ireland. Many thanks in advance for at least reading my call for help.

Kobo GLO stuck in reboot loop

Hi all,

My Kobo GLO N613 seems to be stuck in a reboot restoring loop. Every time I start the reader it says its "recovering" and ends up on the "connect Kobo to pc" screen. My problem is simulair to this one: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=265510

What I tried so far.

-Switch image

Although it didnt work with the Kobo Glo image which I recieved from Davidfor(Thanks so much!), the reboot screen appeared to be different compared to my original image. Could that be the reason the image didnt work?

-Factory reset

I really hope its software related. Anyone have some ideas? Im kinda a rookie when it comes to ereaders :/. Thanks!

External Booting for Kobos (aka boot from external SD card)

Hi. Something that I find useful and can't find here in mobilereads:

This works for Kobo models:

Tested (Touch, Aura HD)
Non tested (Glo, Aura, Aura H2O)
Non working (lack of SD mainly): Mini, Glo HD, Aura One ...

The bootloader has a recovery mode that is triggered with button combination --- WITH the device turned off -- :

For Kobo Touch: home + power
For other models: frontlight + power

Using those key combos the device will boot with the first partition of the external SD card as the rootfs. The filesystem must be ext2/3/4 for this partition.

You can boot debian or any other armhf distro with this method!
Have fun...

Issues:

- if you run the stock OS with the external SD plugged in it will display a warning message about invalid format and sometimes will atempt to format the partition as vfat. So you MUST power off your device and extract the external SD card before running the stock OS.

- the recovery script that uboot runs seems to take more time than normal boot. Very noticeable (2-3seconds). This means that external booting takes more time than internal booting.

Are these hacks possible? (Changing search / home screen defaults.)

Hello all! I have finally patched my Kobo H20, and all is great, but I would really like to know if these two hacks are possible. I couldn't find them in the list.

1) Is it possible to change the search option so that it defaults to searching your own files, rather than the Kobo server?

2) Can I get rid of the Kobo advertising button on the top right hand corner of the home screen? The one showing 'New Reads!'. I'd much rather have one of my own collections there.

Thank you!

I have edited the Geogria font in FontLab Studio so that it can display my language. But do I realize that there is something that i can not open the font Geogria from kobo firmware on my computer and reverse?

Downgrade 4.5.9587 --> 4.4.9344 without system reset

Has anyone done a downgrade from 4.5.9587 --> 4.4.9344 without doing a system reset? I'd rather not lose all my collections etc, as putting those back in order (even doing it offline through sqlite) is kind of a pain...

I load all my books via the browser... which is (in)conveniently broken...

Thanks!

Aura Edition 2 SD Card Glued In?

Hello everyone. I'm looking for someone who has opened their Aura Edition 2. I just popped the back off of mine and it looks like the micro SD card is glued in the socket. I tried to gently pry it out with a fingernail but it doesn't come out easily. Has anyone been able to take theirs out? I didn't want to try to force it if it isn't removable.

Thanks!

Nickel doesn't start anymore

Hi all,

I've been lurking here for a while, appreciating all the info and work done on KSM and Koreader.

Inspired by a thread around here about syncing the device with Google Drive, I was attempting to create some sort of sync (either with Gdrive or a local http server). Didn't succeed yet.

My problem:
I managed to break Nickel :smack:: it doesn't start anymore.
Not from within KSM nor when booting by itself. The 5-boxes loading indicator is on forever.

KSM start fine, but wifi doesn't work anymore (it did before).
Which means I can't connect with SSH either now (afaik).

Device is a KA1, with KSM 8 + the patch for KA1 installed.

Possible causes:
  • I messed around with /usr/bin/wget, replacing it with a different version. Already replaced it back before the problem occurred.
  • Created and removed some symlinks in /usr/lib/ linking to libssl and libcrypto.
  • Tried to run this script to update to ssh-enabled wget. Script doesn't run properly since AR applet is missing from busybox.
  • As far as I recall I have rebooted (into Nickel) successfully several times after the things mentioned above. Didn't do any other dangerous things that I know of.

My questions:
  • Can I safely try a (hard) reset or would that remove KSM & koreader?
  • Would sideloading the current firmware help?
  • Any other way to fix this? :D

Right now I can at least read books in koreader. I'd rather not brick the device completely

Any suggestions and info would be greatly appreciated!

Hello,
can you please please tell me how to enable the beta features on the Aura ONE??
thank you :)

I've compiled rsync 3.0.9 for the kobo.

Hello everyone.

I've been lurking this community for years, never wrote before, I have a Kobo GLO, during the day I'm an embedded linux programmer and I use the same tool that I believe Kobo is using for their software : Yocto.

Yocto is great, you give it instruction and it compiles stuff for you.

Anyway, the processor I'm using daily is a freescale one, same architecture of my Kobo Glo (and I believe most of the kobo devices) and I have the entire linux build system in place.

I was looking for a way to keep my server and my kobo synced together but rsync is not present in the actual build of the system , so, I built it :

https://www.dropbox.com/s/aot7ku5mdi...rsync.zip?dl=0

works from any location, ideally can be used in the update zips as well.

happy hack!
