Patch request: Pocket article delete option default

Patch request, hopefully this is possible. Thanks!

when you select "remove" for a Pocket article, either by touch and holding from the article list or by selecting it from the reading screen, you get a confirmation box that says "Remove from..." with two checkboxes: "eReader" and "Pocket account".
By default the "eReader" checkbox is always checked and "Pocket account" always unchecked, and whether or not each checkbox is checked is not remembered between subsequent deletes (very frustrating).
I want both to be checked by default, because when I'm removing it is always because I want to remove from my account.

I would also really appreciate a patch that changes the default to 'Remove from Pocket' (or, to have the selection always be the same as the previous selection. Frankly I think Kobo should have programmed it that way). It never ever ever happens that I want to remove an article from my eReader but not from my Pocket... it's a mini hassle to have to perform an extra tap every time I want to delete... I know it sounds ridiculous but it just gets annoying over time.

Anybody with enough time and skill kind enough to take a look? :thanks:

Aura H2O not starting, reset not working

My H20 (2014 edition) is not starting anymore
I have koreader installed and was reading a pdf when the reader stopped responding. It froze on a page with back light on. After a while the light got off.

I tried charging, pressing and holding power switch, pressing reset with a needle - all the things previously worked in this situation - nothing helps.
The reader still shows same frozen page. After connecting to charger, laptop or pressing power button the led turns on for several seconds like it's going to boot (laptop recognizes "NS Blank Codex" but doesn't show the drive), than it goes off again.
There was an update recently which I chose to handle as "partial update" by the manager at the start (forgot the name) where you choose between nickel and koreader, but the reader has worked fine after the update

Detecting if book being read / home screen in nickel

Hi,

I am trying to build an alternative way to launch koreader/other programs from within nickel, without relying on file monitoring.

My idea was to poll the /dev/input/event1 to check a particular region of the screen, and performing the desired action if touch coordinates are detected. Possibly print a small icon in the statusbar (if its possible to print to screen), which could be touched.

However I need a way to detect if the statusbar is hidden / we are reading something or if we are on the homescreen. Is there a way to accomplish something like this?

USBMS Shenanigans...

So, I may have been playing a bit the past several days... :D

I've been trying to see what I can get away with behind Nickel's back, without actually having to kill Nickel. This was born from ideas from kobo-rclone, but I wanted to push things further.

So after some experimentation, getting sidetracked and creating an onscreen keyboard using FBInk (oops...), and many device reboots, I'm finally starting to get something that is faintly approaching stability. I will note that my H2O has carried on like a trooper, although it's probably wondering if there is a Union to join...

Where I'm at currently is I can switch into USBMS mode, remount the internal memory partition (to a different mountpoint, just in case), and crucially, enable WiFi.

Once there, one can do what one wishes to do without having to kill Nickel. Touch input even becomes viable (I may have written a touch driver to go along with the onscreen keyboard). I finally figured out today, that Nickel appears to kill the touch screen after a few seconds in USBMS mode. HOWEVER, not if the Wifi gets re-enabled, which makes me wonder if there is a link somewhere.

This was all done in Go.

Here's a screenshot of what I currently have:

I am curious to know if there is a way to make my kobo aura h20 v1 look like the 2nd edition in firmware in order to get overdrive? I'm sorry if someone asked already. I have already installed the 2nd edition latest firmware with no luck.(and my device shows the current firmware version in settings)

Thanks for any help or input,

Hello,
I want to use inotify-tools (https://github.com/rvoicilas/inotify-tools) for a script I need on my Kobo but couldn't cross compile it (on linux or macos). I'm not a C or CPP developer so my knowledge on build systems for these are quite limited. Can someone help me with this?

KSM GUIDE CONFUSION

$

Hello Everyone,

I‘m having a little trouble following the Kobo Start Menu (& koreader) install guide. I'm trying to follow a guide where the years of accumulated amendments and assorted postscripts have largely discombobulated its step-by-step clarity. With a confusion that does nothing to becalm the nerves of this very cautious noob. Some bits really don’t make much sense to me, and I find some steps a little too vague and open to potentially disastrous misinterpretation. Which is why I was hoping that someone could help me clear up a few points.

Being a big fraidy-cat I’ve decided not to launch straight in to installing Koreader on my Kodo Aura One. I’ve instead spent £10 on a used Kobo Mini which I’ll use for a test run.

First thing I did was reset and then update the Kobo Mini. The Mini is now running the 3.4.1 firmware.

1. I then connected it to my Ubuntu PC so I could walk-through the process. However, I found myself stumped when looking for the .adds folder – the KSM 09 destination for Koreader. A ctrl + h revealed the .kobo, .kobo-images, .adobe-digital-editions hidden folders, but .adds is nowhere to be seen. Should I create the .adds folder myself or does it appear after after the KoboRoot.tgz is added to .kobo?

2. The guide’s recommendations begin with a suggestion to prepare your PC for usbnet. The next two recommendations suggest disabling wifi with changes to a .msh file. Does the first point imply that this change will be made via the webinterface, or is it via the e-reader screen? Or do I have to dig around for config files and set at them with my text editor. Sorry if this a stupid question but I’ve never used KSM or Koreader before. And I've also never used usbnet with linux: another hurdle I'm hoping to avoid.

Any help and guidance much appreciated.

Thomas

user interaction while nickel is running?

While reading a book with nickel, I'd like to do something akin of displaying a Yes/No popup dialog box, and allow the user to interact with it.

The problem is, nickel will process those touch events and flip pages or do other random things.

Is there a way to make nickel ignore touch events temporarily, so you can go seamlessly from reading to an interactive popup and back to reading?

My attempts so far were unsuccessful:

- (un-)binding the touchscreen driver disables touch, but for nickel it does so permanently; have to re-start nickel entirely to make touch work again.

- freezing nickel (kill SIGSTOP) allows user interaction just fine, but when you unfreeze nickel (kill SIGCONT), it will still process all touch events that happened while frozen

Any ideas?

Tolino Android for Kobo Aura/Aura 2/Aura H2O

I have four Kobos, and I'd like one of them to run Tolino Android, in "reasonably unmodified" form (i.e. whatever patches are needed to make it run, no more than that). In order of decreasing preference, it'd be the Aura 2, Aura, and finally either of my two H2O's (original generation). Is anyone willing to help me in this endeavour?

Lazy Sunday idea - launching scripts/apps from Nickel

$

WARNING: The following post is a Lazy Sunday Idea. Something may or may not come of it.

So, this post sparked off an idea about a possible method of launching scripts or programs from within Nickel, without needing to monitor files.

The idea is as follows:
  1. The hypothetical launcher (HL) is started from the rc5 startup script.
  2. It then periodically searches for the battery icon. Once found, the position and (partial) outline is obtained. This outline (a three segment polyline perhaps?) and it's posistion does not appear to change throughout nickel, at least on my H2O and firmware.
  3. When the battery icon is detected onscreen, the status bar is showing. Draw the HL icon in around the centre of the status bar. Touching said icon will launch the launcher, where it grabs exclusive touch input etc.
  4. Unless the launcher has been invoked, we simply wait for touch events. When a touch event is detected, check for the existance of the battery icon. If found, see above step. If not found, disable/remove HL icon, and wait for next touch.
  5. So long as the battery icon does not change position, finding it should be a trivial, quick and non cpu intensive task. A couple of memory compares may be enough.

So, there's my idea for the day. Please feel free to poke holes in it, or suggest improvements.

If someone wants to run with it, go ahead. Otherwise, I may give it a go myself.

This patch thread is for firmware 4.10.11655 (a6b8ad2d5175f2e07ba63120475b362a6b1407fb).

Instructions for patching on Windows, Linux, or macOS with kobopatch:
  1. Download the firmware from here.
  2. Download and unzip kobopatch_4.11.11911.zip from here.
  3. Copy the original firmware you just downloaded into the kobopatch src folder.
  4. Install the firmware on your kobo BEFORE proceeding with the next steps.
  5. Enable patches in the files in the src folder (or use the overrides in kobopatch.yaml to keep your options separate).
  6. Run kobopatch.bat on Windows, or kobopatch.sh on Linux.
  7. If the patching succeeded, a file named KoboRoot.tgz will be created in the out folder. Copy it to the .kobo folder of your device.
  8. Safely remove your device.

Flashcard

This is coming from an old thread ( Flashcards app for kobo glo ) and if you're looking for an other alternative I guess this one is worth mentioning too ( What's the vocabulary builder like? (hidden feature) ).

I create a rudimentary flashcard app for Kobo. It pops up while you read and forces you to study. So you read, study, read, study, read, ... switching between the two modes is kind of seamless, you continue reading right where you left off ( see also user interaction while nickel is running? ).

You can customize how many cards should be shown per session, and how many minutes / pageflips should be between sessions. The only way to get out of a session and continue reading, is to answer all the cards. :devilish:

Cards are chosen randomly. For each card you can answer whether it was "easy" or "hard", and doing so changes the probability for that card. "easy" cards are half as likely to appear again, whereas "hard" cards will be twice (or four, eight) times as likely.

So unlike a big SRS application like Anki, which has a concept of time and "due cards" there is no time based scheduling here. Any card can appear at any time, it's just more likely to show a card you don't know well.

Cards are image files which you have to create yourself - I used inkscape / imagemagick for that. On the downside that means you can't just put a text file in there, on the upside it gives you total freedom in terms of design and layout of cards. You can also use transparency and use background images shared by all cards, so you don't have to duplicate data and image files stay reasonably small.

To illustrate, here's an animated gif:

I'll provide a sample deck set so you get the idea.

Support for cloud services (Dropbox/Nextcloud)

Hi Forum!
I would like to share a project that I worked on some time ago, then abandoned, then brought back to life thanks to some interested people on Github. I didn't know this forum before, but I think that this project would fit well in here.

With this addition, you can have your kobo automatically download books from shared Dropbox or Nextcloud folders. Just add the share link in a simple configuration file inside your .kobo folder and that's it!

I tested in on a Kobo Glo and on a Kobo Aura H2O.

You can find more information on my github page: https://github.com/fsantini/KoboCloud
and installation pack here: https://github.com/fsantini/KoboCloud/releases

Hope this will help somebody!
