Aura H2O tps65185_int_func under-voltage on DCDC1 detected !

This is a continuation of the thread titled Kobo Aura H2O frozen and unresponsive e-reader, which needs a more technical investigation than seen in the main forum.

Just to summarise:

The problem emerged when deleting an article from Pocket and returning to main article list.
Screen refresh typically goes all white, all black then the new page data is displayed.
This time the screen froze as it was turning black and remains there with most of the new image in inverse video (white on black) and a few lines of the article still showing around one inch from the top edge, just below the text "ARTICLES FROM POCKET".

The is no visible evidence of damage to the screen or substrate and the frontlight still functions.

The device is unresponsive except for being able to power off (long press) and power back on.
When powered back on, the switch light comes on constantly for a few seconds, then flashes once a second or so for around ten seconds. The front light illuminates and then nothing.

The device is quite old, dating back to 2013/14, was obtained as a hand me down and has been used on a daily basis since birth. As far as I know it has never suffered any traumatic falls or drops, just the occasional firmware 'upgrade'.

After seeking advice on the MobileRead forum (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=322950), it was suggested that it may be due to a failing or corrupt SD card. I requested a SD card image and awaited the arrival of some new 16GB microSD cards onto which to put it.

Accessing the SD card requires the opening of the device. Since it is ostensibly waterproof, this is no mean feat and destroy the water-tightness of the casing. Removing the front bezel is tricky and requires a lot of care not to damage either it or the components inside. The gloop use to seal and stick down the bezel was cleaned away using Zippo lighter fluid. In my case the frontilight lightguide (the dark, translucent bezel underneath the front bezel) remained attached to the screen, unlike in many of the teardowns where is becomes magically detached without effort or explanation (looking at you iFixit/Instructables).
Four screws at the corners of the main screen/board assembly can now be removed ant the whole thing tipped out of the rear casing to reveal the main board and gain access to the SD card.

While waiting for parts as noted above, the following were tried:

i) endless messing with the power button;
ii) attempts to do a factory reset by holding down the power button and tapping the touch screen at the bottom corners;
ii) disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it to see if it unlocked any locked up BIOS/firmware chip;
iv) reseating the flat flex cables for the screen and frontlight connector.

None of these were successful.

With a multimeter, I confirmed that the battery voltage was good (4.1V) and found several power rails were present - 1.1V, 3V and 12V (at the fronlight connector).
So the board seems to be alive at least and producing the correct voltages for the main chip/RAM, the other chips and the frontlight illumination.

So the new cards arrived and the SD card image dd'd on ti it as per the instructions on the MR forum, the data partition was resized to fill the available space and it was inserted into the device.
Sadly, there was no change - the problem was not the SD card.

kobopatch users & non-Kobo-supported languages

A few days ago this post by Vetchy started me thinking a bit more about the day-to-day problems of Kobo users who's native language is not one of those currently supported by Kobo.

I have since spent a bit of time digging around in the GUI-related bits of the firmware, trying to understand it better. I've also tried to answer a few other language-related queries. Some of those were dictionary-related which is NOT what I want to discuss in this thread.

What I'd like to discuss here is the general Kobo GUI. The main problem appears to be that the 2 main Kobo system fonts Georgia (serif) and Avenir (sans-serif) are not well-suited to some languages, Avenir in particular. The default fallback font used when Avenir is inadequate (probably one of the CJK fonts) is not good either.

I'm going to assume that those of you who find the GUI unsatisfactory have at least managed to sideload one good font which makes reading your books tolerable. Otherwise you'd presumably have bought a better eink device by now, right?:)

If we wait for Kobo to package better unicode system fonts we may be waiting a long time - possibly licensing cost is an issue. So I'd like to see if there's anything we can do to improve things using your sideloaded 'good' fonts and the current kobopatch system.

There may not be a single "quick fix" so, what I'd like to know is, which parts of the GUI need early attention.
vostro here suggested the various Book lists would be a good start. This is your opportunity to have a say.

To make progress I will also need the help of experienced kobopatch users who are willing to beta test any new patch ideas and report back here in a "timely" manner. By "timely" I mean responding in <24hours, not weeks between posts.

There may not be a 100% perfect solution but I hope it's worth a try.:)

I wait to hear whether there are enough willing volunteers to get started.

ETA: My hope is to try to start with simpler left-to-right horizontal languages, e.g. those who use the Cyrillic alphabet. Chinese, Japanese, Arabic (probably others) are too ambitious at this early stage.

This patch thread is for firmware 4.18.13737 (0f26e9d78c8564081468817aa796dcea05114055):

Instructions for patching on Windows, Linux, or macOS with kobopatch:
  1. Download the Kobo firmware release
    You can find the download links here here.
  2. Download and extract the patch zip
    Download and unzip kobopatch_4.18.13737.zip from here.
  3. Copy the firmware file to the src folder
    Copy the original firmware you just downloaded into the kobopatch src folder.
  4. Install the firmware if needed
    Install the firmware on your kobo BEFORE proceeding with the next steps. You can do this by extracting the contents of the firmware zip into the .kobo folder and ejecting.
  5. Choose your patches from the files in the src folder
    Enable patches in the files in the src folder (or use the overrides in kobopatch.yaml to keep your options separate).
  6. Run kobopatch
    Double-click kobopatch.bat on Windows, or run ./kobopatch.sh on Linux.
  7. Install the patches by copying KoboRoot.tgz into the .kobo folder of your device
    If the patching succeeded, a file named KoboRoot.tgz will be created in the out folder. Copy it to the .kobo folder of your device. Safely remove your device once you are finished. On Linux, you may have to press Ctrl+H to show the .kobo folder.
Download

If you aren't currently on 4.17.13337 or newer, you'll probably want to take a look at the 4.18.13694 patch thread, as it includes many large changes, additions, and removals.

Hello,
I have the last new device from Kobo, and i want to install KSM.
Can you help me / drive me to make KSM09 to be supported by Libra ?
both unsuccessfull.
  • With the Forma KSM9 release :
    Screen orientation is landscape. Very bad touch response with random result. Then screen orientation become portrait.
    Wifi and usbnet : OK
    web RMC server: Not started and unable to start it without touch response.
  • With the update 001 : Same screen orientation (landscape). NO any touch response. Wifi and usbnet : OK, RMC server OK.
Warning : Don't try update 001 after forma release before doing a factory reset. I do it, and then the device alway reboots in loop with the message "please handle your update files" "
KSM=>Nickel=>KSM=> etc...
RMC save me. With command line, i manage to delete koboroot.tgz.

=> So i'm ready to do betatests with you

Thanks for help, I'm impatient to play with my device

Anyway to change the "My Books" in Kobo to include the amount of pages?

Ok I used to read with Kindles up until 6 months ago until i got a Kobo Forma and find it is a much better device for tweaking with patches etc.

One thing i miss from Kindles is that on the list of books you have it gives you an idea of how long the book is with a series of dots. A long book will have lots of dots in a row, a small book will have not many dots.

On the Kobo on the 'My Books' list of books the only thing re size is the size of the book e.g. 638kb.

The only thing i have been able to do is use the Calibre plugin to change the book title to have the number of pages next to it - see attached. It is not ideal and quite ugly.

Is there any way of changing the information on the right hand side where it says the size so it can show the total pages?

Upgrade Aura 2 v2 failed: 4.2.8110 to 4.18.13737

Hello!

Today I tried to update my Kobo Aura 2nd edition v2, but it went horribly wrong and I'm looking for advice.

Fortunately I had a dd dump of the sdcard so I restored it, but I want to try again.

I know quite a bit about embedded systems and linux, but not too much about how these Kobos work. I've also not visited the forum probably two years.

I'm a privacy extremist. I don't ever let my device connect to wifi and never will. I do all of my syncing of files via USB and an rsync script I wrote.

I simply unzipped the kobo-update zip file to my mounted .kobo directory and let the device upgrade. I suspect there may be some intermediate upgrades required, but I don't know which ones.

After I installed the upgrade files and unplugged my USB port, the Kobo looked like it was doing it's upgrade, but it ultimately failed and I ended up with a black screen after boot.

I had no modifications to my OS files which I recall.

Any advice?

Terminal user accounts?

Whilst my Aura H2O was attached to a serial console, amongst the many messages output I noticed a login prompt pass by.
Poking around on an SD card image I notice that there is a passwd file in /rootfs/etc with the following content:
Code:

root::0:0:root:/:/bin/sh
ftp::14:50:FTP User:/var/ftp:
bin:*:1:1:bin:/bin:
daemon:*:2:2:daemon:/sbin:
messagebus:*:30:30:messagebus::/bin/false
nobody:*:99:99:Nobody:/:
admin:$1$$CoERg7ynjYLsj2j4glJ34.:0:0:Linux User,,,:/home/admin:/bin/sh

Does anybody know if these accounts are used? If so what might the passwords be, presumably they are the same for all Kobos as they only relate to using the console.
If I ever get my Aura to work again I will need to do some stuff via the serial console, so it would be useful to know the root/admin logins.

suggestion for kobo cover

I recently replaced my kobo mini with kobo clara hq.
I diy my own sleep cover for my clara hq.
In designing the diy sleep cover, I wondered why kobo did not design a kobo case that could attach the screen cover only.
The only screen cover will reduce the weight and exposure the nice design non-slip back of the reader. In order for attaching the screen cover, the design of the reader has to be modified.
Looking for a better design kobo superior to others.

Kobo Nickel default font extraction

I wanted to transfer some fonts, mainly the Kobo Nickel, from the main OS to KOreader. Is there a way to extract it or find it in the main directory? I can't find it in the hidden folders or anywhere from a google search. Seems it is not open source. Is there no way to get it outside of the Nickel OS?

Touch Bricked Kobo Touch N905B

Hello mates,

I have a Kobo Touch N905B e-reader from 2012 or 2013 with a 4 GB memory. When I was trying to update it in 2017 it shut off and never turned on again. After a little tinkering I let it go. This week I wanted to have a go at trying to revive it. However, no matter what I did, It wouldn't boot. I got a black blank screen. I tried soft reset, hard reset. When these didn't work. I kind of figured that its image might have become corrupted. I flashed N905B image to original micro sd card via Win32DiskImager (thanks to @davidfor from the forum). Then, I put the micro sd car back in the device and now I get a blinking green light and black blank screen.

Do you guys have any idea about how I can repair my device. Also the battery probably must have been drained during idle years. Could this be the reason for not booting up even after I flashed the image? :help:

Thank you for your help.

Nickel UI font unicode support

Hi guys,

I bought a Kobo Forma a couple of days ago and I imported epub books from my old Kindle. I am stunned that the Romanian characters in the titles, authors, descriptions are rendered as an empty square, but my 8-year-old Kindle shows them correctly.

I contacted the Kobo support on this, but I don't expect much. Can something be done about this?

The required characters are:
Spoiler:

Also, the keyboard does not have them so I cannot type them and neither does it have Russian cyrillic ones...

Thanks.

Patch- which ones reduce header/footers

Hi,

I have a collection of Kobo readers, from the Glo HD to the H20, and arriving today, the Forma.

I'm familiar with the Kobopatch system and how it works, as all of my Kobos are patched. What I'm not clear on however, is how to reduce the size of the footer. On my H20 with the latest 4.18 firmware, the footer is still a little big for my tastes. I have the footer set to min/max of 26 pixels. Any smaller, the footer text drops below the bezel.

Which one of the patches do I need to customize to get the look I want? Right now I have both the header/footer on. The top is the book progress which looks something like 243/345 and the bottom is the chapter progress which looks like 13/43.

I have the progress bar turned off because it blocks the footer page count #.

Clara HD KOReader - Clara HD slow loading book

Folks,
I've just installed the newest KOReader version in the latest Nikel environment. I had got no any issue when installed it but when i tried to load the book for reading, it worked very slowly, taking around a min to load a 2mb Kepub format book for the very first time. It would be no matter for me cause it may take time to load the book at first.
But there was a very serious issue that i couldn't think i can stay with Koreader. It's when i adjust a font, align, margin and anything which related to book format. It takes too long for KoReader to apply the adjustment (5 mins average) which i thought the device was hang/ frozen, but it's not.

So anyone could tell me how to resolve the issue? Or it's just a nature of Koreader when using in Clara HD? Please kindly help!!!

I usually use mobi format & keepub. Things seem the same in formats whatever.

Resurrecting the Kobo Easter Eggs?

I was looking through Kobo's Github account and noticed they posted the code for the blackjack, poker and chess games they used to ship on their devices. For anyone with a cross compile environment, I'm curious: Since the code is open source, would it be possible to compile the binaries and use something like KFmon or KSM to launch them with an appropriate script? Or is the firmware or hardware too new to execute them in 2019? Solitare's fun, but I do enjoy a hand of poker or 21 sometimes too. :P

I'm thinking of buying a Forma, and am interested in seeing if it's possible to backup the flash memory, then replace the NAND with a larger chip.

Has anybody attempted this yet, and/or can somebody help me get a good scan of the PCB/NAND chip?

Kobo Aura (Walmart version) Sleep Screen Text

I've got a new Walmart version of the Kobo Aura.

I like it. One thing I would like to see different is that when it is asleep it says 'Sleeping' at the top of the screen and shows the cover of the current open book. I would like to see a text line showing my name & contact info where it says 'Sleeping' so whoever finds it when I leave it somewhere can call me. Can this be done & where would I find the info about doing it.

Thanks.
