Screen calibration

Hello,
I've just swapped the SD image of my Kobo Glo, using another one coming from another Kobo Glo.

Now I'm facing a problem: the device works but the text color is not uniform, some kind of gray instead of solid black. After some digging, I've discovered that each screen is calibrated (waveform) and tuned by the factory.

Now, I wonder where are the calibration datas stored and if I'll be able to fix my display problem. In other words, is it possible to update eink waveform and if so, how?

BTW: I read about a lot of people asking for the SD image. It's only me with this problem?

BPP on a kobo ? 16? is it?

Is the kobo glo a 16 bpp machine under the hood?

The reason I ask is I am looking to implement SDL dithering on the kindles.

I did try just patching the SDL lib I built using a patch that Niluje dug up but it seems to target 16 bpp blit?

So. Is the device 16bpp by default?

is there a place to go ogle some metrics?

thanks! :2thumbsup

Mini Setting up kobo without signing up?

I am currently contemplating on purchasing a kobo mini. I have heard that one is required to sign up for a kobo account in order to set up the device. Is it somehow possible to bypass this? Thanks

Hi!

I've compiled the first version of Cool Reader for Kobo. It is available with KoboLauncher and the rest of my programs.

http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=201632

"CoolReader is fast and small cross-platform XML/CSS based E-Book reader for desktops and handheld devices. Supported formats: FB2, TXT, RTF, DOC, TCR, HTML, EPUB, CHM, PDB, MOBI. Platforms: Win32, Linux, Android. Ported on some eInk based devices."

Custom Screensaver

Hi there, I am new to the Kobo platform coming from sony/kindle platforms and just picked up an Aura (not HD). I was wondering if I can install a custom screensaver picture that will always show up when my Aura goes to sleep (instead of the current book cover). I did a quick search of this forum but did not find an answer. If someone can either explain if this is possible or point to a relevant post, that would be very appreciated.

Some Kobo Glo readers freezes in KoboLauncher

Hi!

Please help me to investigate this problem. KoboLauncher "freezes" on some Kobo Glo devices (not on every device, but several devices with this problem exists).

The problem is not in the KoboLauncher itself. It doesn't freeze when usbnet is on, it doesn't go to freeze when I don't turn off the blinking LED in the autostart mode.

I can't reproduce this problem on my Glo.

Any ideas?

Koreader v. Coolreader

Sorry in advance for the more than likely dumb question, but can someone detail the differences between Koreader & Coolreader? What would each of these applications be used for (specifically on Kobo Aura HD), and what functionality would I get if I installed them? I've scoured through both forum threads and I can't ascertain what either of them do or functionality provided.

TIA

:thanks:

running custom kernel on kobo

Hi!

Is there any chance to run a custom kernel on kobo without swapping SD?

Yesterday I tried kexec but no success. It seems that kobo kernel is compiled without kexec support.

How can I overwrite existing kernel image? Any ideas?

I dont want so swap SD...

Aura HD telnetd broken with firmware 2.10.0?

Following the documentation (1, 2) I tried to activate telnetd on my Aura HD.

Upgrading manually the firmware from 2.8.1 to 2.10.0 went smoothly (except that the cookies of web browser were discarded/broken, so I had to reconnect to Twitter, reddit, etc.).

Then I did inject the "run.sh" hack, dumped the conf files from the firmware to the user volume, modify them, and inject them back into the AuraHD's OS. OK, no problem.

But when I try to connect using ftp or telnet, I get the message "Connection refused".

nmap is reporting:
Code:

Not shown: 992 closed ports
PORT      STATE    SERVICE
24/tcp    filtered priv-mail
1296/tcp  filtered dproxy
1300/tcp  filtered h323hostcallsc
2030/tcp  filtered device2
9290/tcp  filtered unknown
14238/tcp filtered unknown
15000/tcp filtered hydap
58080/tcp filtered unknown

So indeed, it looks like neither ftpd or telnetd are listening (or simply running) on the e-reader. Anybody has it working?

Bricked Kobo Glo - how to put image on SD card?

When my Kobo Glo resumed from sleep it seemed like it went into factory reset. I was faced with the initial screen I had back when I first took it from the box.

When I get to the part about connecting to the PC, the Kobo desktop program will not connect; it does not see the Kobo and loops forever.

All that I can think of is reloading the image file to the internal micro SD card.

If anyone has a better suggestion, I would be very happy to hear it (e.g rest to factory defaults without reloading the SD card).

I can download the latest image file from http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=185660 but I am unsure how to copy it to the micro SD card. The card is unreadable by Windows, but I am afraid to format it.

If I could see it in Windows, I could figure out, but right now I am stumped.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

[Update] I just found this thread which indicates 3 partitions. Since I currently run Windows, it looks like live Linux CD would help. But how to proceed after that?

Regal technology (less "ghosting") on Mini/Touch/Glo

Aura uses "regal technology" that allows for faster page turning and eliminates “ghosting”. You can read here http://goodereader.com/blog/electron...egal-and-carta that:

Quote:

Good e-Reader also found out that Regal is compatible with both Pearl and Carta (...)
We have Pearl screen in Kobo Mini / Touch and Glo. It maybe be possible that to enable regal technology on any Pearl screen we need eInk driver changes (they are here https://github.com/kobolabs/Kobo-Rea...hw/imx507-aura) and probably second waveform data from Aura's SD card.

I don't have time to play with it now (maybe later) and I don't have the Aura's waveform data. Anyone wants to try? :) Do you think it is worth an effort? Is the screen refreshing of Aura much butter?

I bricked my Kobo and finally un-bricked it by followin http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=209122

While looking for a solution, I noticed that one can expose the bare Android o/s and wondered if there is a list of Kobo Glo images which can easily be installed using the methods described in the thread referenced above.

[Upadte] Let's rephrase the question as "Question: what neat stuff can run on the hardware of a Kobo Glo, and does anyone have an image file which I can simply copy onto my hardware and try it out?"

What images are available for the Kobo mini?

Glo Kobo Glo won't wake from sleep - on battery

Ny Kobo bricked itself (resuming from sleep) and I loaded a new image. See http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=226719

Now all is well, with one big exception: if I let the device sleep on battery power then the power on switch has no effect.

If I connect it to a PC, by USB, then it resumes - to ask me if I want to connect to the PC.

Short term, I have sleep set to "never" and have a USB cable at home, one in the office, and carry a third, just in case.

Long term - what can I do?

Thanks in advance for any help.

[Update] I forgot to say that they battery is full (96% charge). Also, the power switch is still in place, slides, pushes against the spring, feels just like it always did.

what to install on kobo glo + illustration&css sideload + color A4 e-ink

Hello and sorry in advance for my poor english.

There are a lot of things I want to ask, and I did not know where would be the best place to post in.

I discovered last year only the e-ink technology, and as I was very interested in the potential of it- especially the low needs in battery (I hate to have to plug my smartphone all the time)- I bought a Kobo Glo.

I then played a bit with it, learned about the epub format and encoded some with worse results than I'd have expected (poor css support).

I don't think I've upgraded the firmware yet.

I would like to know what I should install on my Kobo to improve it. I don't know if any firmware or regular software might better the responsiveness, the browsing of my books (5 books by 5 currently???), and broaden the css support of epub (epub3 support?? ^^ but my main problem is the absence of the pseudo elements :after and :before, and the custom fonts?).

Also, I bought a book that I liked very much when I was a kid: Charmed Life of Diana Wynnes Jones. However, my best paper version of it has illustrations of a specific artist, which of course are not included in the ebook (it would have costed more to them). Due to that, I want to scan my paper book, and include the illustrations. But I don't really want to edit the "official" ebook, and I would like to be able to sideload them, a bit like one can sideload subtitles files in a movie.

Since I've read it is possible to sideload css, I've thought about a program that would load side files which contain elements to inject in the DOM (epub).

For instance, if a file named "customElements.txt" with the lines "document[2].body.section[2].p[8].word[3].after = img('illustration.png');" can be sideloaded and interpreted, I could be able to edit a book (add comments, illustrations, custom css, whatever) without directly editing it. Does any program let you do that, or should it be coded? And if it's to be programmed, is there a Kobo API somewhere?

Finally, I'm seeing "color e-ink" videos on youtube, but I don't see any in the market yet where I live. I'd like to buy one of these in the future, in the A4 format (bigger than pocket book) so it will be nice with european comic books (A4).
Since not everything is best viewed in A4 format, is it possible to slice the screen into 2 A5 parts with big current e-ink devices (and rotate the device)? The same way we see 2 pages when we open a regular book?

Thank you for your time.

framebuffer settings for koreader

$

Hello,
I wrote a small boot script that allows the user to choose at startup
the application to start up (nickel or koreader).
It shows two buttons on the screen (using pickle showpic) and
detects which button has been pressed (pickel wait-for-hit).
This procedure allows to avoid the boring procedure with the png image and
the need for a process to continuously monitor file access...
Now I can successfully start nickel normally, or start nickel and after some seconds
launch kobo_reader.sh.. it works.
However I would try to avoid to launch nickel to kill it afterwards,
so I tried to lauch directly kobo_reader.sh.
Something happens, because backlight turns on, but nothing appears
on the screen... the buttons disappear and only a completely white screen remains.
I tried to use the framebuffer rotate trick, but it didn't works.
What is needed to setup the frame buffer before to start koreader?
Thanks
Andrea

Hi

So, I screwed up, and I actually thought the SD images would be readily available, so I didn't make a backup - I guess a was wrong :\

Could a friendly soul please send me their SD image for their N905B?

Thank you so much!

(I realized I posted this in the general Kobo forum, so sorry about the double post)

Has the time come for us to start Wiki'zing some of these threads

I can't help but wonder if maybe, someone from this community has to take the initial stabs at adding pages to the MR Wiki for some of the ongoing activities here; F/W releases, Patcher, Coolreader, KOReader, Night Time mode are all topics that could probably gain from this.

The benefits of using the Wiki is it's far FAR easier for multiple people to edit / add content to an entry, that no longer would useful tidbits be sprinkled throughout the thread but could be easily added, either to the main page, or a sub-page, and also that a history of changes is maintained by the Wiki.

I should add that I for one have no interest in defining or setting up the initial structure of the Wiki pages for these mods, but will happily add content to them once in place.
