Kobo mini bricked, tried tinkering...

$

Hi guys,
I have had a working Kobo mini for a few years and I love it. It's been mostly collecting dust but I decided to try loading a few new books on it and connected it to my macbook - it was working fine then. The app complained that it needed to be updated, then the firmware.. I do both, somehow something happens (likely pulled usb cable while working on something else) and the Kobo mini gets bricked.

original symptoms are: nothing comes up on screen, on power up LED flashes green blue green and nothing. Screen is blank.

I tried soft reset, hard reset (taking back off and using paperclip..) but nothing changes. I stumble upon this post detailing how to flash and unbrick the Mini's SD card.

Here are the steps I feel that MIGHT have messed up the reader/SD card:
- My SD card is 4GB and readable when I inserted it in my usb card reader - I was able to navigate it. After the flash computer complains that it cannot read that disk ("the disk inserted was not readable by this computer") which leads me to believe that I may have fuxxored the card flash...

- My serial # "sticker" inside the kobo is printed "(SL) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" which is quite a few extra #s than the "N705000000000" the flash post refers to - I entered the 17 'x' actual number (omitting (SL)) using HexFiend editor, it did push the Hex fields a few bytes down....I saved..

- I flashed the SD card using procedure described here... a 'diskutil list' showed the SD card reader as /dev/disk2 - I unmounted and did a 'sudo dd if=Desktop/KOBOMINI1.img of=/dev/disk2' command. 30 minutes later the 'cannot read disk' message was on screen. Could the flashing the entire reader have fuxxored the flash? (original post uses gparted to determine location, but I figure osx's diskutil list is even)

- Original flash post says that gparted is used to shorten the partition flash because he is trying a 2GB card - but mine was 4, like the image provided... I tried to fix the image using disk utility but it won't fix/firstaid anything, even when pulling the image from disk... (step 7 in here)

- I put the card back in the Kobo and no LED powering up at all. Even after hard reset.

- I tried charging the kobo for a few hours, try to redo procedure.. same. No green or blue LED. surprisingly, this morning, I tried powering it up without the SD card in and I got a blue LED signal.

- Because of no LED and tinkering with the Kobo with it's back open, there might have been a few times where the SD card was loaded in/out without device being properly shut off. I hope I didn't damage anything.

very new to Kobo, but fairly proficient with hacking/modding android - is there any way to make/replace the Stock Kobo os with Android? just seems thatit would make life so much easier to be able to install apps/apks directly on the GloHD

Also, i see multiple sections for vaious kobo devices, but no specific thread for the GloHD - am i missing it somewhere?

See the Index to the Metazoa firmware patches thread for a description of what these patches do.

Before starting:

1. Make sure your Kobo ereader is already running firmware version 3.19.5613 (4b76aa47bd).

2. Check that your battery is well charged.

Patching from Windows, Linux (i386/x86_64), or Mac (OS X 10.8-10.9, i386/x86_64):

1. Download and extract patch_kobo_3195613.zip (attached). [WARNING: If using Windows, make sure the path to the extracted files does not contain any '&' characters.]

2. Download the Kobo firmware archive version 3.19.5613 for your device (See this thread) and copy it into the 3.19.5613_source/ subdirectory. (Don't extract the firmware zip archive.)

3. Read and edit all the *.patch files in the 3.19.5613_source/ subdirectory in order to: choose which patches to enable (patch_enable=`yes`) or disable (patch_enable=`no`); and to change some of the replacement values to suit your device and preferences.

4. In Windows double-click 3.19.5613.bat; For Linux/Mac open a terminal, change to the patch_kobo_3195613/ subdirectory, and run ./3.19.5613.sh from the command line.

5. If there were no errors, copy the resulting KoboRoot.tgz from the 3.19.5613_target/ subdirectory to the .kobo directory on your ereader.

6. Safely eject and unplug the device, which will then update and restart.

To return your ereader to its original unpatched state:

1. Edit all the 3.19.5613_source/*.patch files to disable all patches (set patch_enable = `no` for every patch).

2. Repeat steps 4-6 of the procedure above.

Kobo as remote keyboard for smartphone

Hi,

I'm investigating the possibility of using my kobo (aura) ereader as a keyboard for my android phone eg when traveling and I have both with me anyway. Not sure how that experience would be, but I cannot imagine a full screen kobo keyboard + a full remaining screen for the android app would be worse than a small split screen android keyboard :).

One possible path would be to use the "remote keyboard" app on the phone which just runs a telnet server and accepts input from a telnet client connecting to a specific port.

So now I 'only' need some kind of full screen keyboard for the kobo that forwards the keystrokes over a telnet connection.
Anything that could be used for that ? Or any projects I can start from to make such a thing ?

Thanks,
Bram

Kobo Touch 2.0 and VNC (for a noob)

Hello there !

I just received a Kobo Touch 2.0.
I have a first question and didn't find an answer right now : What is the "model number" of the Touch 2.0 ? Mark 3 ? 4 ? Because when I'm looking inside the information it says MODEL N587.

If I'm asking that it's for my second question :
I want to install VNC viewer on it, and actually I'm not really sure how to do that.
Do I need to install a specific firmware like this one : http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=268407 to install this VNC app : http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=228168 ?

Aura H2O Koreader 12 hour clock?

$

I've just installed KSM and Koreader. So far, I really like having a visual progress bar, clock, batt status, pages left in chapter indicators at the bottom.

The only thing though, is while I know how to read the 24 hour clock, I prefer the clock to be in 12 hour format. I don't see a setting for this anywhere in defaults.lua

Is there a way to get the clock to display in 12 hour format?

EDIT:

Is there a way to increase/decrease the front light level other than accessing the front light setting options to manually specifify the light level numeral? The two finger pan swipe gesture doesn't seem to be working.

Device is Kobo Aura H20 running FW 3.19.5613 with patches.

Aura H2O KSM Wifi keeps turning off / Koreader progress sync

I've set up Koreader on both of my Kobo devices, and koreader progress sync doesn't seem to be working. Its possible that the epubs I'm using aren't the same- one might have the font settings removed in the CSS stylesheet. I will try reloading the book in question on both devices and then try sync again.

I did notice that the WiFi doesn't stay connected though. When I put both devices to sleep and the wake up, I have to reconnect to the WiFi via KSM by using WiFi.enable.dchp .

How do I get KSM to automatically reconnect on wakeup? For sync to work, I need WiFi to connect itself.

Aura H2O Open book in Koreader from Nickel?

AS the title indicates, I would like to know whether I can open a book with koreader from Nickel? I like managing my collections from Calibre and Nickel provides a nice GUI for looking at collections and reading a books metadata, but for reading, I like koreader.

The startkoreader PNG in Nickel does not start koreader, it just goes to KSM 8 instead.

Kobo Patch GUI

Introducing Kobo Patch GUI

This is a simple GUI for editing the unofficial kobo patch files. It is written in Python, and uses Tk/Tkinter for its interface.

The GUI is currently quite limited. It has the following features:
  • Enable/Disable patches
  • Disable all patches
  • Checking for mutually exlusive options*
  • Crude tooltip help

There is currently no way of making custom changes (such as changing margins, etc) or saving changes for the next version of patches. I hope to be able to create these features someday.

Download

Downloads are available from github here.

Installation/Usage

Unzip the archive to a folder of your choosing and run KoboPatchGUI.pyw.

Python 2.7.x or 3.4.x+ is required to run this GUI. For Windows users, a standard installation of Python should be sufficient. Linux users may require Tk from their distro's software repository. Mac OS X users will have to tell me if the program works or not, as I am unable to test.

The GUI works best with the latest versions of the Patch files provided by GeoffR, from version 3.19.5613. Note that GeoffR has added a feature in the patch files to assist this GUI, which was NOT in the initial release. It his highly recommended to download the latest version of the patch before using this GUI.

USE THIS PROGRAM AT YOUR OWN RISK. WHILE IT SHOULDN'T CAUSE ISSUES, I CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT IT WILL NOT.

Note that I am at best a part time hobby programmer. Therefore my code may not follow all best practices, or be all that efficient.

The code can be found at my Github account here. I welcome any improvements or added features.

Aura H2O Boot from external SD

Dear all,

I am new to the forum and a bit late on the topic! I would like to know the method for allowing boot from the external SD on the H2O. Apparently it is possible to do so :

Searching this thread and others I haven't found any method specific to the H2O (maybe there is no need for something specific to the H2O?). Is it feasible/attemptable without opening the Kobo?

Some context: Ideally I would like to run Android and/or Debian from the external SD (dual boot?), I believe some have managed to do just that on other Kobo devices but I haven't found someone reporting success and specific method for the H2O.

Thanks in advance for reading this.

See the Firmware 3.19.5761 discussion thread for information about what has changed in this firmware version.

See the Index to the Metazoa firmware patches thread for a description of what some of these patches do.

Manually install cron on Kobo Wifi?

Is there any way to install cron on a Kobo Wifi 1.9.12? I have telnet enabled, and have seen other Kobo Wifi posts that use cron but it seems to be missing somehow on mine.

apt-get and yum both seem to be excluded as well, so I am not really sure how to go about installing it. Is it possible to create a KoboRoot.tgz update patch that adds cron?

Javascript and local .html files

Greetings!

I'm using an "out-of-the-box" Kobo Aura H20.
I'm hoping to use it as a one-stop reference tool - the ability to read pdfs, access tiffs, use a browser in the rain, etc is very handy and not economically available in other hardware.
BUT...
I wanted a scientific calculator. I knocked one up in Javascript, and although it works well enough when I use the Kobo browser to access the calculator "on-line" on a remote server, the javascript is not active when I load the calculator.html file into the Library and view it. The buttons show, but do nothing. Some experimentation showed it's not my bad js, but that the reader ignores js.
Q1) Is there a way to make the reader parse and act on js code?

I tried to use the browser to walk the local directory tree by entering

file:///

in the address bar - but that fails to load anything.

Q2) Can the kobo browser access local files?
Q2a) If so, how, and what syntax?

Thanks for your time...

Aura H2O What tape to use to reassemble H2O case

$

My Aura H2O stopped responding. Tried everything charging, resetting, obsessively pushing the power button and opening the case and disconnecting the battery. It worked, stopped again and started working again while charging. I'll leave it in the charger overnight and see how trustworthy it is tomorrow.

Does anyone have a hunch on what kind of two-sided tape to use to reassemble the H2O case?

I just finished fixing my LG G2 mobile and I was able to buy two-sided tape manufactured by 3M that was pre-cut and everything. Cost me 1€ and saved me an hour. Now the tape used for the H2O is different. It feels more elastic, more rubbery and it is black.

I wonder whether this would work? This seems to thick (0.8mm)

Aura HD dead with Kobo Start Menu

I've had a sort of bricked Kobo Aura HD for some time now. It run out of battery with nickel on and I haven't been able to turn it back on. I've had it plugged, I've tried the pin reset and the power/light buttons reset. When I try to power it on the LED tuns on for about 10 seconds.
I think it had fairly new versions of both Kobo firmware and KSM.

Does anybody have any idea of what happened or how can I bring it back to life?

Aura Any ways to display page numbers directly on the sleep screensaver?

Hello,

I recently began to use the full screen mode on my Kobo Aura (no footers and headers), which is really great. But by doing so I have only access to the percentage read both on the screensaver info box and when I touch the middle of my screen to trigger the info/time/settings menu... Which bothers me a little since I don't know how "big" the book I'm reading is...
I wanted to know if there was a way to display "pg 25 ouf of 500" on the screensaver info box? (or at least when it alternates with the time after touching the middle of my screen)

Thanks :D

kobo glo direct filesystem content modification

Hello

I just got an kobo glo hd, I would take the sd card out of the device, mount it on my computer and modify the scripts, add binaries, etc.
I've seen that there is a file called /fs.md5sum, I guess i need to update it after modifying the filesystem contents.

I would modify a KoboRoot.tgz to make it do what I want, but I cannot found one the same version as my current ROM, 3.16.17 bcc6ad7496 7/30/15.

So, my question is, can I modify the root filesystem contents? what's the second partition used for?

thanks

Glo Kobo Glo problem

Hi, I have a kobo glo that has a problem. It's is stuck at "battery is almost dead", 0% battery remain. I've tried all reset and I've charge it for days, nothing changed, the display is stuck at this pop-up....
So, I've tried to follow this guide, an user gave me his .img and I've written it to the formatted micro sd (I've used the original 2gb micro sd card that was in the kobo, is it a problem?).
Then there is a problem with this passage:
Quote:

Next load up “MiniTool® Partition Wizard Home Edition 7.8”.Right click it and select Extend.
From here move the slider all the way to the right. You should see a total of both the unallocated space and the KOBOeReader partition.
I can't extend the kobo ereader partition. It says: "The last operation will create an overlapping partition. It's a tool of MiniTool Partition Wizard. And your last operation will be cancelled". I've tried with 3 Notebook but always I received the same error. So I've tried to put the micro SD into the kobo but anyway it doesn't work.
So, what I have to do? I have to buy a new sd? I could try with Ubuntu? Or probably is it not a problem of the micro sd but of the kobo?
HELP ME PLEASE, sorry for my bad english!
