Touch Kobo as home automation display

$

Hi,
I thought I would share what I have done in terms of using my kobo touch as the dispay interface to my home automation system [www.openhab.com].

I hacked the Kobo with Marek's debian image and used python and qt quick as the language and ui frameworks respectively.

The Kobo gets data from openhab via REST and display some of the data available. It also has buttons that can be pressed to switch on bedlights, etc linked to my home automation system.

Im displaying the following information retrieved from openhab:
- alarm state and open windows and doors
- sunrise and sunset times
- time and date
- electricity units left in the meter
- Energy power - total, fridges, geyser, pool, irrigation.
- chance of rain, current temperature [from sensors in the house]
- forecast temperature for today
- wind today
- weekly weather forecast
- state of my bedlight and electric blanket as button which can switch them on/off as well.

Ive added the app called QOK [Qt on Kobo - how original!! :D ] to the awesome menu.
Ive also added UsbNet to the menu, although I use wifi at home.

I framed it also using my unused dremel for the waf. :thumbsup:

Now my next project is to do boat automation using the kobo display in full sun with the intention to use phonegap apps on the android image of kobo.:chinscratch:

Is Kobo Start Menu open-source?

I am using Kobo Start Menu 8 for my Kobo Aura HD. The only issue I am facing is, I cannot type punctuation marks. Though I can change my WIFI password, there is no guarantee all WIFI passwords are English characters. So I am looking for Kobo Start Menu source code to do some tiny modification to support more characters for inputting. But I do not find any threads related to Kobo Start Menu source code, so is it possible?

Thank you.

Aura H2O Any way to get total number of pages info without opening book?

Hi,

The feature I miss most from my kindle 3 is the dots below the book title in list view that showed me how long the book is without having to open it.

On my H2O, the only way to know how long a book is is to open it and see how many pages it has.

I don't expect the dots to make an appearance on the Kobo, but short of editing the book title with page numbers info while transferring it to the reader from calibre, is there a way to have that information?

There's the series information in list view - is there a way to add in #pages there too?

Touch libnickel.so with kiwix-serve modifications for firmware 3.19.5761

Hi all,

In case anyone is still interested, I went and patched the libnickel.so from 3.19.5761 in the manner described at https://a3nm.net/blog/kobo_glo_hacking.html. This means that you can launch the browser without requiring to connect to wifi, and use wikipedia with kiwix-serve offline.

The instructions are pretty much the same, except you need to include the line

ifconfig lo 127.0.01

in your rcS file, before you launch kiwix-serve, and the file to replace is called libnickel.so.1.0.0.

The patched file is available here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxj...lLVmxRbUk/view

On a related note, does anyone know how to get kiwix-serve to respect a mobile user agent?

I have a kobo aura HD. but it is not good as kindle for some reason:
1. Kindle has a Chinese bookstore where I can buy Chinese book while kobo not.
2. 'Send to kindle' is very convenient to copy books to the device while kobo not.

Bypassing registration in 3.19+

Hi,

Is there a way to use 3.19.* firmwares without a Kobo account? The old method with manually inserting some arbitrary user data into KoboReader.sqlite does not work anymore. A "Critical Error" dialog appears on Nickel startup saying "Your eReader hasn't synchronized with the server yet. Any highlights, notes, or reading progress you've made on the device will be lost." After pressing the "Sign out" button the whole .kobo directory is deleted.

Seems like Nickel is doing some stricter checks on the registration data now. I tried to insert the real eth0 MAC address of my Kobo into the ___DeviceID column, also used proper UUIDs for UserID and UserKey, but it didn't work. Does anybody know how to generate user data to make 3.19+ firmwares happy?

Aura HD Factory reset but button broken

My Aura HD is playing up.

1. Some (DRM) books won't open because it claims I'm not logged in to Adobe - but I am.
2. Some books don't appear at all and aren't found in a search, but when the reader is connected to my PC they show as a file.
2. Generally slow and unresponsive.

The problem is, I've done a factory reset so many times the button seems to be broken - when I poke my bent paperclip in the hole it doesn't touch anything.

Help! Is there another way to try a reset, or have I bricked it?

I wonder if its that time again for Kobo to Push its latest and greatest to devices?
Its been a while and I am wondering if they will be brining out a new a new firmware soon. So lets have some fun and see what others currently wish for in a new firmware...

It can be a serious wish or just a fun one. Who knows maybe a fun a serious suggestion will manifest it self in future incarnations of Kobo!

Touch Doubt in dictionaries creation for for kobo touch!

Ereader: Kobo Touch Model: N905 Firmware: 3.19.5761 (Original firmware)
Hardware Updated: 2GB of internal micro sd card exchange for 8GB.

My Linux debian 8 system and installed Pyglossary and Penelope via git repository , including all dependencies .

https://github.com/pettarin/penelope

https://github.com/ilius/pyglossary

I used dictionaries bgl Babylon to convert kobo dictionaries format. One for translation of words en -> pt. And another dictionary of synonymous words in pt.

The conversion process.

pyglossary

1.1 - python2.7 pyglossary.pyw mpb.bgl mpb.ifo

2.1 - python2.7 pyglossary.pyw mipb.bgl mipb.ifo

No error message. Three files created with extensions : ifo, dz and idx.

1 - (mpb.ifo, mpb.dz, mpb.idx)

2 - (mipb.ifo, mipb.dz, mipb.idx)

1.2 - I created a zip file with these three files -> mpb.zip

2.2 - I created a zip file with these three files -> mipb.zip

penelope

1.3 - python -m penelope -i mpb.zip -j stardict -f pt -t pt -p kobo -o dicthtml-pt.zip --sd-ignore-

2.3 - python -m penelope -i mipb.zip -j stardict -f en -t pt -p kobo -o dicthtml-en-pt.zip --sd-ignore-

I followed the dictionaries installation procedure explained : https://github.com/pettarin/penelope

And I could not install any dictionary.The Kobo Touch only recognizes the original dictionaries. Asking to enable Wifi to reinstall dictionaries. What am I doing wrong? Grateful for your attention.

Aura H2O USB connection with application running?

I have an application running in the H2O browser and I'd like to be able to write a file to the reader while the browser is running. However as soon as you connect to another computer via usb the applications stop and you get the black screen the says "Connected and Charged".

Has anyone looked at keeping the reader applications going while connected to a computer via usb?

I've noticed some usb networking add-ons here but I'm not sure if the applications can function while networked or if it behaves the same way.

Glo How to trigger library update after side-load?

Right after the launch of Nickel I start a script that automatically downloads images and text files from the internet. After the download I want to see those files in the library (under "Books"). How can I trigger a library update?

What I tried so far:
1) Sync: no success
2) USB connect and disconnect: works

How can I trigger an AUTOMATIC library update after the download?

Aura H2O Annotations to screenshot batch

:help:

Hi everyone. I was wondering would it be possible to write a user-friendly script / patch / mode that would basically make screenshots out of each annotation in a book. I take a lot of annotations for future references and doing it manually is a pain in the ass, especially when you have to sacrifice the power button as a screenshot trigger. The script would read the annotation position, go to corresponding page/location and take a screenshot, then move to the next annotation and so on.

Is this even possible? Thanks.

Aura HD current screen in suspend/off mode

is there hack that allows the current screen, whatever you are looking at right now on the aura hd (text, image, whatever), to remain the screen image when you put the kobo aura hd in suspend mode or power off mode?

Shift dictionary to the bottom

Dear,
I have got an Aura HD, and unfortunately the top part of the screen is now no more functional (drop from 20cm on the floor). It means that approx 1.5cm on the upper part of the screen does not work properly (line ...). I want to keep the e-reader and do not throw it to the garbage. So I used the patch to enlarge the top margin. Thank you, that's great ! So I can still read ebook on it ! but when I want to access to the dictionnary for a definition or a translation, the dictionnary is inreadable since it is located on the top part of the screen. Is there a way to shift it down, so I can see it on the part of the screen still functionning ?
Thank you very much
Gilles

Too many instances of inetd

$

Hi there,

I gained telent access to my Kobo Glo HD as described here in several places using a preconfigured KoboRoot.tgz with the following contents:
rcS2
Code:

#!/bin/sh
mkdir -p /dev/pts
mount -t devpts devpts /dev/pts
/bin/busybox inetd

inetd.conf
Code:

# <service_name> <sock_type> <proto> <flags> <user> <server_path> <args>
#ftp        stream        tcp        nowait        root        /usr/sbin/tcpd                in.ftpd
#telnet        stream        tcp        nowait        root        /usr/sbin/telnetd        telnetd -l /bin/login

21 stream tcp nowait root /bin/busybox ftpd -w -S
23 stream tcp nowait root /bin/busybox telnetd -l /bin/login -i

inittab
Code:

# This is run first except when booting in single-user mode.
::sysinit:/etc/init.d/rcS
::respawn:/sbin/getty -L ttymxc0 115200 vt100
::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/reboot
::shutdown:/bin/umount -a -r
::restart:/sbin/init

::sysinit:/etc/init.d/rcS2
::respawn:/bin/busybox inetd

Everything seems to be working fine at first but after a while the Kobo crashes. What I noticed is that if I call
Code:

ps
there are a lot of inetd-processes showing. Repeatedly calling
Code:

free
I can see how free memory decreases while the number of inetd-processes rises.
As a workaround calling
Code:

pkill -f inetd
removes these processes without any obvious negative effect. But I don't like this "solution".

Does anyone else have this phenomenon of increasing number of inetd-processes?
Does anyone have a solution to avoid this problem? Are the above files correct for the Kobo Glo HD or is there something different for the Glo HD?

Kind regards
KristianR

Glo Glo HD - View Details of a book

$

Hi everybody,

I read quite a lot of posts, but did not find an answer to my question.
I use Calibre (2.53) to sort my books and add quite some information and custom columns. I have also several tags which I use to create the collections on my Kobo reader (several of them: Touch, Glo, Aura, AuraHD, H2O and Glo HD), in version 3.18.
I transfer the epub to my kobo with the adequate extention, having at the end Kepubs.

My question: do I have any possibility to show on my Kobo reader some more information in the detail view of the book (e.g. number of pages - which is a custom column in Calibre - tags, when I have several of them and are in Calibre... etc)? Of course, the alternative would be to put the information at start of the synopsis... but, if I find an easier solution, that would be highly welcome :)

Thanks a lot
