Showing games on 4.3.8842 firmware

Is there any way to show games on the new Kobo firmware?

I have tried creating an image and setting the mimetype to application/x-games-Boggle, but it crashes.

I have tried adding tiles the same way as on the old home screen, but nothing changes.

Is there any other things I could try?

Little annoying dots above footer - patch responsible?

$

My Kobo Glo HD has been showing tiny dots above the footer which are the tops of letters from the first line of the next page. So if the next page starts with "the hunger...", the tops of the "th" and "h" will show between the last line and the footer. They don't always show, but I haven't yet found a line spacing setting in which they don't show at all.
They are really annoying because it looks like there's dust on the screen.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Here's a list of my applied patches in case one of these is responsible:
(I haven't changed any values in the line spacing and footer patches.)
  • patch_name = `Custom reading footer style`
  • patch_name = `My 24 line spacing values`
  • patch_name = `Custom left & right margins`
  • patch_name = `Custom font sizes`
  • patch_name = `Freedom to advanced fonts control`
  • patch_name = `ePub fixed/adjustable top/bottom margins`
  • patch_name = `Custom page refresh options (1,2,3,...,12)`
  • patch_name = `Custom Sleep/Power-off timeouts`
  • patch_name = `Set kepub hyphenation`
  • patch_name = `Fix three KePub fullScreenReading bugs`
  • patch_name = `Always display chapter name on navigation menu`
  • patch_name = `Force user line spacing in KePubs`
  • patch_name = `Force user line spacing in ePubs (part 1 of 2)`
  • patch_name = `Un-Force user font-family in KePubs`
  • patch_name = `KePub full justification default`
  • patch_name = `Increase The Cover Size In Library`
  • patch_name = `Increasing The View Details Container`
  • patch_name = `Dictionary frame size`
  • patch_name = `Fix page breaks bug`
  • patch_name = `Default ePub monospace font (Courier)`
  • patch_name = `Force user line spacing in ePubs (Part 2 of 2)`
  • patch_name = `Changing the info panel in full size screensaver`

See the upgrade 4.3.8871 spotted discussion thread for information about what has changed in this firmware version.

See the Index to the Metazoa firmware patches thread for a description of what some of these patches do.

Before starting:

1. Make sure your Kobo ereader is already running firmware version 4.3.8871 (eec21f5563). If not, then you need to upgrade before applying this patch.

2. Check that your battery is well charged.

Patching from Windows, Linux (i386/x86_64), or Mac (OS X 10.8-10.9, i386/x86_64):

1. Download and extract patch_kobo_4038871.zip (attached).

2. Download the Kobo firmware archive version 4.3.8871 for your device (See this thread) and copy it into the 4.3.8871_source/ subdirectory. (Don't unzip the firmware.)

3. Read and edit all the *.patch files in the 4.3.8871_source/ subdirectory in order to: choose which patches to enable (patch_enable=`yes`) or disable (patch_enable=`no`); and to change some of the replacement values to suit your device and preferences.

4. In Windows double-click 4.3.8871.bat; For Linux/Mac open a terminal, change to the patch_kobo_4038871/ subdirectory, and run ./4.3.8871.sh from the command line.

5. If there were no errors, copy the resulting KoboRoot.tgz from the 4.3.8871_target/ subdirectory to the .kobo directory on your ereader.

6. Safely eject and unplug the device, which will then update and restart.

To return your ereader to its original unpatched state:

1. Edit all the 4.3.8871_source/*.patch files to disable all patches (set patch_enable = `no` for every patch).

2. Repeat steps 4-6 of the procedure above.

Note that the following patches are enabled by default:

`Fix page breaks bug`
`Default ePub monospace font (Courier)`
`Custom left & right margins`
`Custom page refresh options`

Thanks for some help.

Demo mode as slideshow

Good day,

I have been using Demo Mode as a slideshow viewer. However, on firmwares higher than 4.2.8432, using this resets the settings.

I am looking for the file that controls the demo mode. Haven't been able to spot it yet. If someone could point me in the right direction, that would help immensly. Otherwise, I'll keep searching. If I ever find something, I'll post my results here.

As of now, I'm sticking with 4.2.8432.

Regards

EDIT: I have found some interesting strings in libnickel.so.1.0.0

DemoModeManager12exitDemoModeEvDemoModeManager12ex itDemoModeEv

By digging around this string a bit, I might be able to come up with a patch to keep the settings and all after demo mode off.

building Kobo development environment

I want to develop a simple app for the kobo.
It can replace Nickle and is not related to reading boos (it is a sailing app).

How do I set a build environment for the Kobo.

I have installed the arm cross compiler (arm-linux-gnueabihf-gcc etc)
and I can completely compile XCsoar and the build works when installed.
At first I though I would modify XCsoar for my needs but..... what a huge piece of confusing software.
I have searched for source code to other Kobo programs (koreader, KSM, etc)
but none seem to be available as source code.

I cannot compile the KoboLabs github code. busybox, glib, libmng fails.
I have managed to hack around the glib failure but not the others.

But maybe I am on the wrong track.
What is the easiest way to create a simple graphics program for the kobo?
At first I can make do with the simple display of large fonts in text boxes.

Problem authorising DRM (library books) files

Hi,
I'm new to this forum but found it very informative. Was running 4.2.8432 and can no longer open library books, many people seem to have this issue see link below, and today Kobo told me they are aware of it and are working on a fix, so I upgraded from here to 4.3.8945 and they still didn't open so it appears it is not fixed yet?

https://forums.adobe.com/message/9384241#9384241

I think there is an error in authorising the Kobo to open the DRM files even though Adobe Digital Editions says the device is authorized.
So as I knew my Kobo touch Mark 3 was working fine last year I went back to 3.19.5761 from your website and the library books will now open fine so thanks for that, but obviously I cannot access my books purchased as I would need to sync from the desktop site won't I and then will it update to the latest version again which I don't want?
So are you aware of this issue?
Thanks

Aura How could I see the history of words I looked up in the dictionary?

I'm using kobo aura one. Is there a way to track my entries, so I can memorise words effectively?

Why my KA1 just update by ota to 8432?

Hello
I've just purchased a KA1 and basically, it just update to 8432 after first configuration steps. However I can see in the forum that is available more versions (last is 8966). Why this behavior? Must I upgrade to 8966 manually?

Also, just to confirm, my device is MK6?

Thanks in advance

Kobo Database Restore

$

I am sorry if this question is already answered somewhere, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere that is clear. I am using Davidfor's excellent Kobo Utilities, and have set it up to back up my database daily, and have configured a file location to do so.

Well, the day for me needing that backup has come! Calibre is reporting that my database is corrupt. So, I want to restore the backup made ten days ago, which I have neatly zipped up for me thanks to this utility.

But HOW, exactly, do I restore the database? Do I just overwrite, or replace, the existing files on my Kobo reader (I have a KA1 for reference, though I suppose that probably doesn't matter) and then go from there?

Just to be clear, there is lots of discussion on here about backing up and restoring across different firmware versions or even different Kobo models. That's not what I'm talking about. This is restoring to the same model and firmware version as the backed up version. (At least I don't think a firmware update came through since then.)

Original Kobo Firmware

I recently came into possession of an original Kobo, pre-Wifi. It has firmware version 1.4 on it. The most recent Kobo Desktop versions will not even attempt to do a firmware update. The version of Kobo Desktop that is installed from directory on the device will attempt the update to version 1.8. It will run through step 1 to 4, then skip the 5th and 6th step that actually loads the firmware, straight to step 7 declaring success when, in fact, it was not successful.

It does, however, download a zip file for the update. This file contains 3 images: uBoot, uImage, and fs. Unfortunately, there is no scripts or executables in the file to actually apply the images.

I am looking for some way to update the firmware to version 1.8.

Is there anyone out there that:
1) has the kobo-sd-restore-1.8.tgz file? I have scoured the internet without success looking for it posted somewhere. It probably contains the scripts and the image files
2) knows the partition structure of the internal memory for the 1.8 firmware?
3) knows the intimate details of how the firmware update mode works?
4) knows the location of a live uart on the Kobo 1 motherboard?
5) or any other information that might be useful

Any help would be most appreciated!

Thank you,
nicke

Aura HD Bought a broken unit: IR doesn't work, Screen is OK

I exchanged my 2nd aura hd (working) for a broken aura hd and some cash. The "new" unit came with IR broken, but IR is ok. The problem is the case, because the inners are broken and IR touch driver can't get any signal from the plastic part.:smack:

The exciting part:
The screen of the "new" device is A LOT OF better than my other device (which had, until this moment, the best aura hd screen I saw). So I replaced both motherboards and now I have an "great aura hd" and a spare kobo without touchscreen (again, because the plastic frames, not the IR) to use for a project.

I don't know, but I would like an alarm clock with an e-ink screen and a big snooze button to turn on the lights during a few seconds...

Please share your ideas about repurposing an ereader. Thanks :)

Glo 1% brightness isn't allowed since upgrade [Glo HD]

$

Hi there !

I've very recently purchased a Kobo Glo HD (from ebay, since Kobo has stopped selling this model) which was running firmware 3.9...-something from 2015.
I then flashed version 4.3.8966 downloaded from the geek1011.github.io website which provides firmware download links for kobo devices. After that I immediately installed KSM 08 with the recommended patch for it (I'm telling you this because I don't know exactly what caused the issue).

Since then, brightness control has been acting a bit weird, in the sense that if I try and turn off the brightness using the left side screen swipe it will first go down to 1%, and about 5 seconds later it will go to 0%.
Moreover, if I set the brightness to 1% from the relevant panel, it will switch to 0% after that same amount of time (i.e about 5 seconds). So the 1% brightness setting is now forbidden on my reader (or - more precisely - is only allowed for about five seconds).

Have any of you experienced this ? Do you have any thoughts about what could've caused this and/or how to fix it ?

I'll appreciate any input, thanks ! :)

KOReader on Kobo Aura One - One Column zoom

I am a newbie in the world of e-reader. I just bought my Kobo Aura One and installed KOReader on it.

I was wondering if it is possible to zoom to fit one column width. I read a lot of scientific pdfs with double column. It would a great option if I can zoom to fit one column with with the landscape setting. I tried one column setting with overflow with KOreader, but the texts were converted and got very messy

Is it feasible? Do I need to install certain patch or add something to KOReader?

Thanks for your tips.
